PHARMACY & PHARMACISTS – “Cogitation towards Faith”
Pharmacy, the word derived from the Greek word
‘Pharmakon’ means drug- drugs in a specific concentration and dosages are
called medicine, and Medicines are lifesavers that cure disease and disorders
by maintaining and regulating homeostasis.
History of Pharmacy:
From the era of ancient history, humans
were using the crude extract from plants, animal, and mineral sources for
treating diseases from which the traditional system of medication has started
and with the passages of time Ayurveda, Unani, Allopath have evolved.
The evolution of the pharmacy profession
follows five milestones:
- Ancient Era - The beginning of time to AD 1600
- Empiric Era - 1600 - 1940
- Industrialization-1940 - 1970
- Patient Care Era - 1970 - Present
- Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering Era- The new horizon
In the last decade the changing lifestyle,
with the advancement of fast food and the rise in pollution has caused an exponential rise in patients numbers, the disease has also seen a shift with
the modernization but the health industry has also geared upon, to face the
challenges and pharmacy is been a great part of this endeavor.
If
we consider the Healthcare System as a building, Pharmacy, and Pharmaceutical
Sciences stand as the pillars.
Pharmacy:
Pharmacy is a profession, with the art and
science of preparing from natural and synthetic sources, suitable and
convenient materials for distribution and use in the treatment and prevention,
of diseases.
- Art from compounding to dispensing.
- Area for invention.
- Science for isolation and synthesis of the compound.
- A platform for an embodiment of drug to medicine.
Who is a Pharmacist?
If Pharmacy is ‘ART’ then the Pharmacist is
the ‘ARTIST’.
A pharmacist is a specialist in
medication, the beholder of medical information, companion of the physician,
counselor to the patient, and guardian of the public health.
Identity of Pharmacist:
- The Person holding the qualification of D. Pharm/ B. Pharm /Pharm D from PCI recognized institutions.
- The Person having registration number from respective State Pharmacy Council as prescribed Pharmacy Act, 1948
[Special Instructions: A complete Pharm D
holder also eligible for being enrolled as Pharmacist under respective State
Pharmacy council as ‘Pharm D Regulation, 2008’ prescribed by PCI.]
Roles of the Pharmacist:
- To dispense the quality medications safely.
- Ensure suitable medications with appropriate dosages.
- Ascertaining the chain of delivery of the prescribed products.
- Compliant towards patients with justifications.
- Dynamic and reliable for healthcare.
- Uplifting society spontaneously.
- Develop towards the prosperity of elements having medicinal values.
